A useful event model for B2B software

Reliable product analytics starts with a small, documented event model that reflects customer intent and can be trusted by product, engineering and operations.

Define the decisions the data should support

Before naming events, decide which product or operational decisions they should inform. This prevents a tracking plan full of clicks that nobody uses.

For a B2B product, useful questions might include where an account gets stuck during setup, which workflow requires manual intervention, or which feature is adopted by successful teams.

Instrument stable business events

Events such as workspace_created, integration_connected or report_exported are more useful than generic button_clicked events because they describe a business action.

Keep names, properties, ownership and privacy rules documented. Treat the schema as part of the product contract and change it through normal code review.

Make the data trustworthy

Track delivery failures, duplicate events and missing properties. A smaller dataset with clear definitions is more valuable than a large dashboard built on inconsistent instrumentation.
